A rare and exquisite 'Imperial Defence College' gold and enamel brooch of the finest quality, depicting 'The Beast' with trident resting on a tri-part motto scroll 'Concordia Roborat Artus', the reverse bearing Birmingham 9 carat gold hallmarks for 1968 and maker's details "G & Co Ld" in trefoil (Garrard & Co London) the Crown Jewellers. Very good condition, retaining original pin fittings incorporating safety roller catch, perfect enamel and complete with its original velvet lined leather case with details to the lid "By appointment to H.M The Queen" "Goldsmiths & Crown Jewellers Garrard & Co Ltd 112, Regent Street. W1".

The 'Imperial Defence College' was founded in 1927, it was renamed the 'Royal College of Defence Studies' in 1970. The unofficial emblem crest is a representation of the 'Beast' with the trident representing the Royal Navy, the lion the Army and the wings of the lion the Royal Air Force.
