A rare First World War period 'HMS Essex silver sweetheart brooch' depicting the 'Arms of Essex' within a title strap, surmounted by a 'Naval Crown', the reverse bearing London silver hallmarks for 1915 and maker's details "CW&Sn" (C Widmer & Sons Clerkenwell, London). Very good condition, retaining original pin fittings and gilt finish.
Diameter 27mm.

HMS Essex was a Monmouth-class armoured cruisers built at Pembroke Royal Dockyard, Wales and launched in 1901. During the First World War she was present at the 'United States occupation of Veracruz'. She was sold for scrap in 1921.
