EIIR Royal Hospital Chelsea Hallmarked Gold Brooch.
A scarce Elizabeth II period 'Royal Hospital Chelsea gold brooch'; a fine quality privately commissioned piece bearing the Order of the Garter with motto "Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense" (evil to him who evil thinks) surmounted by a Queen's Crown, the central device depicting a rose and thistle with tri-part title scroll below; the reverse impressed with London 9 carat gold hallmarks for 2001 and maker's details "DWM" in a trefoil. Very good condition, retaining original pin fittings incorporating safety catch in perfect working order, an excellent example.

The Royal Hospital Chelsea, London is the home of the Chelsea Pensioners founded by King Charles II in 1682 as a retreat for veteran soldiers, the first being admitted in 1692. Since 1913 the Royal Horticultural Society has held its annual RHS Chelsea Flower Show on the South Grounds.
