Royal Air Force pilot's wing gold RAF sweetheart brooch in Gieves presentation case

A beautiful scarce pre 1940 period 'Royal Air Force sweetheart brooch', polished 'RAF' monogram mounted on a green enamel laurel wreath, surmounted by a King's Crown inhanced with red enamel, flanked by finely feathered wings, the reverse impressed '14ct' (14 carat gold). Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings incorporating safety roller catch in good working order, enamel intact, and contained in a velvet lined fitted leather case with retailer's details 'Royal Appointment' 'Gieves Ltd. 21, Old Bond Street, London, W.1.' this in good clean condition.
Wingspan 41mm.

In Flight Magazine 17.10.1940 an advertisement cites 'Gieves Ltd 80 Piccadilly. W1' (late 21, Bond Street W1). It appears that on 16 September 1940 a high explosive bomb struck 'Gieves Ltd' and fire ignited when a gas main was damaged.
